The languages we speak affect our perceptions of the world

I am standing next to a five-year old girl in pormpuraaw, a small Aboriginal community on the western edge of Cape York in northern Australia. When I ask her to point north, she points precisely and without hesitation. My compass says she is right. Later, back in a lecture hall at Stanford University, I make the same request of an audience of distinguished scholars—winners of science medals and genius prizes. Some of them have come to this very room to hear lectures for more than 40 years. I ask them to close their eyes (so they don’t cheat) and point north. Many refuse; they do not know the answer. Those who do point take a while to think about it and then aim in all possible directions. I have repeated this exercise at Harvard and Princeton and in Moscow, London and Beijing, always with the same results.

A five-year-old in one culture can do something with ease that eminent scientists in other cultures struggle with. This is a big difference in cognitive ability. What could explain it? The surprising answer, it turns out, may be language.

El hombre a lo largo de la historia, ha creado no nada más a los dioses, sino a toda una multitud de protectores para este andar tan fugaz.

“Doy gracias al Santo Niño de Atocha porque salvó a mi hija de una epidemia de partos que pasó por el pueblo”. La pared de otra Iglesia: en el exvoto se agradece a San Pánfilo que se apagara el fuego del tractorcito cuando ya se andaba incendiando. Cerca, hay otra lámina en que debajo del dibujo de una balacera, la madre da las gracias a la Virgen porque salió con bien su hijo del asalto a un banco. Arte popular, dicen. La expresión de una religiosidad sencilla, liviana sólo en apariencia, sin duda.

Vivir trae cosida una certeza: moriremos. Por eso la vida y la muerte son dos de las tres heridas con las que llegamos, dice Miguel Hernández. La otra es el amor. Y lo malo de la muerte es su contundencia, el brutal cese de lo que era calor, palabra, abrazo, mirada y movimiento. Vivir mata; sólo y solo se muere el que vive y, entonces, andar vivo es duro pues la vida es frágil, apenas un hilo si se le mira bien. Para colmo, si al final está la muerte, ¿quién nos ampara?

Las religiones, los mitos y hasta la ciencia dan (o tratan de darle) cara a la muerte. Ese es el problema crucial de la vida. No se sabe siempre. Hay algunos años de gracia y otros de ignorancia, mas de pronto ocurre que uno crece – eso es, en serio, crecer: llevar lo mortal que somos en la médula de la memoria, saberlo de fijo. Conduce a la pena pero también a crear. Hay quien afirma que Dios creó al hombre. Es cuestión de fe. Lo que no es cuestión de fe, tal vez, sino de saber mirar las cosas con reposo, es que los hombres, a lo largo de la historia, han creado no nada más a los dioses, sino a toda una multitud de protectores para este andar tan fugaz. No dura vivir. Se puede acabar en la cuenta de uno sin llegar a dos. Así de plano.

Porque a solas, sin abogado que interceda con El que Manda y Sabe Todo, ayunos de un ser tutelar (animal, persona, patrón, patrona, santo, familiar del Hacedor de este mundo y de los otros, un valiente que no le dio la espalda a la huesuda y se burló de todo), sin un ser así que nos acompañe y dé cobijo, al cual llamar (advocar), que interceda por nosotros como abogado bueno, o nos convide sus potencias para no estar desolados y sin fuerza para andar “en este valle de lágrimas”, a sabiendas que “Nuestras vidas son los ríos/ que van a dar en la mar/ que es el morir” canta Manrique… vaya, porque la vida pesa y calan sus filos y para acabarla de amolar se acaba sin saber si continúa, no desde hace dos siglos, sino desde mucho antes, hemos creado compañeros de andanzas, pesares, infortunios y alegrías. Hace dos siglos quizá cambiaron de nombre, pero ya estaban con esos que son de los que venimos a vivir. De los dos lados nos viene la querencia o necesidad de valedores.

Estas creaciones nos juntan cuando estamos aislados o para no estarlo –somos los que compartimos los favores de un patrón o una Señora muy poderosa: “No hizo igual con nación alguna” se dice de la preferencia de la Virgen de Guadalupe por su pueblo. Más que juntos, religados. Acompaña su imagen, como bandera, una rebelión que celebramos y hay quien dice que no somos tanto cristianos, más bien guadalupanos. ¿Será? Y santeros, de los oficiales y de los pirata; de los de Roma y los de los caminos de la vida, pues nunca son como los pensábamos. De los del santoral –que fueron primero leyenda– y de los de la leyenda que no llegan al santoral. Digo, si hasta Diego tiene iglesia a modo de mano de Dios.

Cuántas aristas tiene esto que llamamos religión. Muchas. Una es atender a esa religiosidad no ortodoxa del todo, pero fronteriza con lo permitido. La que procura amparo y compañía: que nos adopte un santo o que nosotros lo adoptemos para no andar sin un “detente” a las balas, los federales, la Migra, la DEA o el dolor.

Andan los albañiles confiando en el andamio que cruje pues los cuida la Santa Cruz. Y San José a los carpinteros. Lástima que el Papa anterior, tan taquillero, haya sido severísimo en eso de limpiar la lista de los santos que no valen: se despachó, por ejemplo, a San Cristóbal, patrono y protector de los choferes. ¿Quién, de mis años, no recuerda su estampa del gigante (pasando al Niño Dios de un lado al otro del río) en el autobús Flecha Amarilla, o en el taxi, al ladito del volante? Y con él se fue San Jorge y el Dragón. Dizque porque los dragones no existen. El argumento no deja de ser pobre, en tratándose de existencias que, ya muertas, ayudan a los vivos. En fin.
Vivir es peligroso, y más para los sicarios: tienen su Virgen en Colombia; acá, no les falta Malverde a los narcos y aunque la Iglesia mande decir que no, pues miles de miles tienen como colega a la Santa Muerte para que les ayude en la vida. En el barrio bravo hay constancia.

Súbase usted un 28 de octubre al Metro rumbo a la estación Hidalgo: hay el doble de pasajeros, pero no más se paga un boleto. Cada uno lleva una figura de San judas Tadeo. Ese sí que es bueno: cuando han fallado todos, atiende a las causas difíciles y desesperadas. Patrones tienen los músicos, los galenos; sin la Virgen de la Macarena cerca no se sale a torear confiado. Y cada pueblo, porque tiene capillita, tiene a un Santo Protector. San Jerónimo a ese mismo. Yajalón, en Chiapas, a Santiago Apóstol. Un día me dejó un sacerdote mirar de cerca la imagen y, bajo sus ropas, había otras figuras. Sincretismo, santos patrones y los llamados ídolos, tan semejantes, combinados: la misma necesidad: un señor o una señora que nos ampare a nosotros, los que somos de aquí, los que tocamos música, los que necesitamos —anda San Isidro— un poco de agua para la cosecha, no tanta como en este año. ¿Qué tan secretas deben ser las actividades de los gobiernos? En muchos países se ha legislado para permitir a los ciudadanos obtener información del gobierno y con ella vigilar la actividad de los funcionarios. Sin embargo existen argumentos fuertes a considerar sobre la necesidad de mantener el secreto y la confidencialidad en ciertas áreas del funcionamiento de los gobiernos.

Las nuevas tecnologías hacen posible transparentar prácticamente todo lo que ocurre en las sociedades, no solo los gobiernos se vuelven transparentes sino también la vida privada de los ciudadanos esta cada vez más expuesta ante los ojos de todos.

El avance de la tecnología no puede detenerse. Observamos la proliferación en las ciudades y en los edificios de cámaras que constantemente transmiten imágenes a monitores y procesadores de información, los ciudadanos con las cámaras de sus teléfonos celulares pueden grabar y transmitir cualquier escena que se les presente, los satélites y los sistemas de posicionamiento global (GPS) pueden localizarnos en casi cualquier parte del mundo. Los anunciantes pueden individualizar su publicidad porque conocen nuestras preferencias de consumo al detalle y nuestra salud digitalizada está prácticamente al alcance de cualquiera que la requiera. Esto nos lleva a preguntarnos ¿Qué conviene hacer?

Charles Darwin was interested in how morality fits the human-animal continuum, proposing in “The Descent of Man”: “Any animal whatever, endowed with well-marked social instincts … would inevitably acquire a moral sense or conscience, as soon as its intellectual powers had become as well developed … as in man.”

Unfortunately, modern popularizers have strayed from these insights. Like Robert Wright in “The Moral Animal,” they argue that true moral tendencies cannot exist — not in humans and even less in other animals — since nature is one hundred percent selfish. Morality is just a thin veneer over a cauldron of nasty tendencies. Dubbing this position “Veneer Theory” (similar to Peter Railton’s “moral camouflage”), I have fought it ever since my 1996 book “Good Natured.” Instead of blaming atrocious behavior on our biology (“we’re acting like animals!”), while claiming our noble traits for ourselves, why not view the entire package as a product of evolution? Fortunately, there has been a resurgence of the Darwinian view that morality grew out of the social instincts. Psychologists stress the intuitive way we arrive at moral judgments while activating emotional brain areas, and economists and anthropologists have shown humanity to be far more cooperative, altruistic, and fair than predicted by self-interest models. Similarly, the latest experiments in primatology reveal that our close relatives will do each other favors even if there’s nothing in it for themselves.

Chimpanzees and bonobos will voluntarily open a door to offer a companion access to food, even if they lose part of it in the process. And capuchin monkeys are prepared to seek rewards for others, such as when we place two of them side by side, while one of them barters with us with differently colored tokens. One token is “selfish,” and the other “prosocial.” If the bartering monkey selects the selfish token, it receives a small piece of apple for returning it, but its partner gets nothing. The prosocial token, on the other hand, rewards both monkeys. Most monkeys develop an overwhelming preference for the prosocial token, which preference is not due to fear of repercussions, because dominant monkeys (who have least to fear) are the most generous.

Even though altruistic behavior evolved for the advantages it confers, this does not make it selfishly motivated. Future benefits rarely figure in the minds of animals. For example, animals engage in sex without knowing its reproductive consequences, and even humans had to develop the morning-after pill. This is because sexual motivation is unconcerned with the reason why sex exists. The same is true for the altruistic impulse, which is unconcerned with evolutionary consequences.

El doctor Robert E. Edwards recibió recientemente el premio Nobel de Medicina y Fisiología del año 2010 por su trabajo en el desarrollo de la fertilización “in vitro” (FIV) para humanos.

Desde el comienzo de los años de la década de 1950, el doctor Edwards tuvo la visión de que la FIV podría ser una gran ayuda para las parejas infértiles. Se ha estimado que una de cada diez parejas sufre de esta condición.

Hasta la fecha han nacido mediante este procedimiento alrededor de cuatro millones de individuos, muchos de los cuales ya son adultos y se han convertido a su vez en padres. El comité que otorga los premios Nobel ha considerado que la contribución del doctor Edwards representa una piedra miliar en el desarrollo de la medicina moderna.

Los enormes avances de la medicina moderna nos presentan cotidianamente con nuevos dilemas éticos, a los que la sociedad tendrá que irles dando respuesta.

Building a Brighter Kid: Consider IVF

Most parents-in-waiting like to daydream that their unborn child might develop a cure for cancer or improve upon the theory of relativity — in short, save the world. Now, new research indicates that your best shot of birthing a brainy baby might be to first conceive via in vitro fertilization (IVF).

According to a University of Iowa (UI) study published in the October issue of the journal Human Reproduction, IVF babies scored better than age- and gender-matched peers on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills – a widely used test that evaluates students' abilities — and the Iowa Test for Educational Development (ITBS/ED), which is generally considered an objective measure of educational outcomes. Researchers found that children conceived by IVF score at least as well as their peers on academic tests at all ages from grade 3 to 12.

The study should soothe parents who are concerned about adverse effects of fertility treatments on babies' cognitive skills. Although IVF is considered safe, there isn't much in the way of long-term data on health outcomes. The Iowa study tracked children to an older age than previous research.

"Our findings are reassuring for clinicians and patients as they suggest that being conceived through IVF does not have any detrimental effects on a child's intelligence or cognitive development," says lead study author Bradley Van Voorhis, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the Center for Advanced Reproductive Care at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Van Voorhis and his fellow researchers measured the academic performance of 423 Iowa children, ages 8 to 17, who were conceived by IVF against the performance of 372 age- and gender-matched children from the same schools. The researchers also took into account whether different characteristics of the children, parents or IVF methods had an effect on children's test scores.

The study found that IVF children scored above average on standardized tests compared to their peers. The research also linked other factors to higher test scores, namely older age of the mother, higher education levels of both parents and lower levels of divorce.

“The likelihood is this has to do with nature and not nurture,” says Robert Stillman, medical director at Shady Grove Fertility Center in Rockville, Md., which has the country's largest fertility program. “Those fortunate enough to be able to afford IVF in an arena where there's little insurance coverage may very well have the means to provide a high level of education for their children.”

Would-be parents relying on assisted reproduction techniques are sometimes concerned that using frozen rather than fresh embryos is less than ideal. After all, aren't fresh veggies better than frozen ones? Yet the Iowa study debunked that, showing that children's test scores didn't fluctuate as a result of various methods of insemination or reliance on fresh vs. frozen embryos.

Deliberating between transferring one or more embryos? You might be interested to learn that the researchers found that single babies performed better than twins, who performed better than triplets — if only every so slightly. But even the triplets performed better than the average score of children conceived the old-fashioned way.
Still, that's no reason to rush into IVF if you don't have to. Says Stillman: “This is an argument not for doing IVF to have brighter kids but for having insurance coverage so everyone can have a child if they're having trouble getting pregnant.”

¿Es el altruismo una característica genética?

En muchos casos las personas ayudan a otros sin un aparente beneficio personal. Se ha creido que esta conducta es resultado de la educación de la familia y la sociedad. Sin embargo, se ha comprobado que este tipo de impulsos son mayormente instintivos.

Al estudiar las conductas de nuestros parientes animales más cercanos, los chimpancés, quienes no educan a sus crías en el altruismo, se observa que estos animales actúan en ocasiones no egoístamente al ayudar a sus cuidadores humanos o a otros chimpancés en tareas que solos no podrían realizar. Esta interesante observación la realizaron en 2007 los científicos del Centro de Antropología Evolutiva del Instituto Max Planck en Leipzig Alemania.

Otro grupo de científicos del mismo instituto reportó en el 2009 que se habían observado conductas altruistas en infantes humanos menores de 18 meses ayudando a otros a abrir algún cajón o alcanzar algún objeto.

Es obvio que los genes interactúan con el ambiente. Así se ha visto al estudiar a gemelos idénticos – aquellos que comparten el 100% de sus genes – que la generosidad de ellos depende alrededor de un 60 por ciento de sus genes y la influencia del medio ambiente explicaría el 40 por ciento restante.

Evitar en la medida de lo posible el sufrimiento de otros seres, humanos o animales, debería ser parte del código ético de cualquier persona. Lamentablemente, la cotidianidad presenta otras realidades: la condición humana se ha alejado de normas éticas y ha ahondado en conductas que incrementan el sufrimiento, tanto de sus pares como de muchos animales. Asimismo, múltiples actividades de nuestra especie tienden a deteriorar cada vez más el orden biológico del planeta; sus secuelas, desertificación, inundaciones, contaminación, deforestación e incendios producen enormes sufrimientos a incontables personas y a muchos animales. Del calvario de otras personas como consecuencia de los agravios a nuestra casa, la Tierra, son responsables los políticos cuyas torpezas y sandeces determinan el destino de la Tierra.

Alarma pensar en el mundo, repasar el deterioro de la sociedad o cavilar en el maltrato del ser humano hacia los animales. Cuando algunos códigos éticos se rompen, fracturar otras normas morales es más sencillo. Los eslabones del mal embonan con facilidad. El largo e incompleto párrafo siguiente ilustra ese deterioro.

Lastimar innecesariamente a algunos animales con el propósito de divertirse o para satisfacer inquietudes personales; utilizarlos para experimentar nuevas medicinas sin ceñirse en algunos casos a las normas que exigen evitar sufrimientos innecesarios; matarlos sin razones justificadas –la única válida, cuestionada por muchos, sería que sirven para alimentar al ser humano–; asesinar a golpes a miles de focas en Canadá porque supuestamente su proliferación incide negativamente en las condiciones de vida del mar; matar con inusitada brutalidad a los delfines conocidos como calderones –su error es que son muy sociables– en las Islas Faroe, región autónoma de Dinamarca, hasta teñir el mar de rojo; cazar sin piedad ballenas, como lo hacen mercantes japoneses; perforar a los peces vivos con anzuelos para usarlos como carnada; ejercer la cacería de animales indefensos como deporte o como acto de gallardía; confrontarlos para que se maten entre sí –peleas de gallos o de perros–; perseguirlos hasta masacrarlos, poco a poco, como sucede en Tordesillas, España, donde se alancea al toro hasta acabar con él; encerrar en pequeñas jaulas a los animales en los zoológicos; utilizarlos y maltratarlos en los circos, o, inter alia, enterarse, y, asombrarse del caso de la ballena Tilly, quien mató este año a su entrenadora en el Sea World de Florida, probablemente harta por tener que cumplir con las exigencias de entretener a la muchedumbre realizando piruetas tras ser encerrada durante muchos años en un pequeño tanque de asfalto. Este largo párrafo expone trece casos del maltrato y asesinato de animales; en todos ellos la ética se socava.

El denominador común del listado previo es evidente: no se repara, ni en los significados de la vida de los animales, ni en su sufrimiento. Aunque recientemente se abolieron las corridas de toros en Cataluña, es poco probable que los movimientos en defensa de los animales consigan cambiar las conductas de las personas que no cavilan en el dolor que les producen a los animales. Denunciar esas atrocidades y vivir permanentemente indignado es obligatorio. Exponer el maltrato quizás atenúe un poco, como sucedió con las corridas de toros en Barcelona, la voracidad de la condición humana.

Esa voracidad podría disminuirse si, siguiendo a algunos filósofos, se aceptase la idea de que algunos animales no-humanos (reproduzco el término que usan Peter Singer y otros bioeticistas) son personas. Quienes consideran que los animales no-humanos son personas aseguran que en algunas especies existe laautoconciencia, la noción de que pertenecen a especies distintas y a que cuentan con memoria acerca del tiempo pasado y expectativas en cuanto al futuro. Esas características son suficientes para considerar, siguiendo a Singer, que algunos animales son personas. Ciertas conductas favorecen esa idea. Cuento la historia de Erich Mühsam.

Mühsam fue un poeta judío víctima del nazismo. En 1933 fue detenido y encarcelado. A guisa de ejercicio –recién empezaba a manifestarse el nacionalsocialismo– los torturadores metieron en su celda a un chimpancé que habían robado del laboratorio de un científico quien también había sido detenido. Los soldados nazis estaban convencidos que el simio atacaría a Mühsam, cuyo aspecto, según narran los historiadores, era lamentable. Para sorpresa de los torturadores, el chimpancé abrazó al prisionero, lo protegió y le lamió sus heridas. Los soldados, enfurecidos por la piedad del animal, lo mataron. Son también ejemplos de lealtad y de amistad animal los perros que fallecen tras la muerte de sus patrones, los delfines que conducen a buen puerto a los náufragos o los perros que defienden a sus dueños.

La piedad, la compasión y la amistad son grandes cualidades. Buen número de animales no-humanos las ejercen. Así como los códigos éticos de los seres humanos invitan a respetar la vida de sus símiles, nuestra especie tiene la obligación de modificar su conducta hacia los animales.

Los enormes avances en la biotecnología nos presentan nuevos retos éticos. Por ejemplo, es posible que a partir de células madre obtenidos de la piel de adultos, se puedan pronto generar gametos viables (óvulos y espermatozoides) permitiéndoles a los futuros padres escoger las características deseadas de sus hijos e incluso generar nuevos individuos humanos, hijos verdaderos -no clones -- que comparten la carga genética de sus padres o madres aun siendo estos parejas del mismo sexo.

Los profesores Kazuto Kato de la Universidad de Kioto y Jan Helge Solbakk, del Centro de Ética Médica de la Universidad de Oslo ya plantean la necesidad de investigar el estatus moral de las células humanas.

De enorme importancia actual es el control de los tejidos obtenidos de células iPS* que existen en los bancos genéticos en todo el planeta y que muchas veces se utilizan sin pedir la autorización de los donantes originales.

Es usual decir que los humanos somos responsables de nuestras acciones y de nuestras omisiones. En una sociedad de personas libres, es claro que los individuos respondemos ante los demás de nuestros propios actos. Si por alguna razón, el vínculo entre las conductas efectuadas y las respuestas exigidas se rompen, toda la estructura de la convivencia social empieza a colapsarse.

La exigencia de responder ante los demás de nuestros actos es esencial para mantener la sociedad. Esto es cierto aun entre animales tan alejados de nosotros como los insectos, cuyas conductas son en gran parte instintivas.

En los dos artículos siguientes podemos observar la enorme importancia de la responsabilidad en la convivencia de los seres sociales. Un artículo en donde se plantea la necesidad de que todos los mexicanos, aun los grandes prelados católicos, respondan de sus actos y otro en el que se observa como las avispas exigen de sus congéneres una respuesta congruente con su apariencia y si no lo hacen son castigadas, es decir se les exige responsabilidad.

En vísperas de las fiestas patrias, dos Méxicos muestran en sus preparativos las ideas que rigen sus conductas.
Por una parte el gobierno federal en un disperso proyecto que echa en la misma olla monumentos ridículos y costosos, espectáculos chabacanos importados a precios de oro y mojigangas irrespetuosas con el tono de superficialidad que caracteriza a sus organizadores.
Por el otro, sin proponérselo como acto conmemorativo pero coincidente con ellos, se produce algo que tiene la trascendencia profunda de lo que transforma a una sociedad para mejorarla. Estas fiestas no pasarán a la historia por lo que ocurra en calles y plazas, sino por lo que se está debatiendo desde el lunes pasado ante los tribunales: la definición de nuestra manera de vivir y de nuestro futuro.
La conducta de Marcelo Ebrard va más allá de lo que pudiera considerarse un incidente personal entre un funcionario público y un clérigo. Ciertamente la causa fue una declaración del señor Juan Sandoval Íñiguez, cardenal de Guadalajara, quien acusó a los ministros de la Suprema Corte de haber sido maiceados por el señor Ebrard para avalar la adopción de menores por parte de parejas del mismo sexo. El jefe de Gobierno le exige pruebas. Y el proceso comienza sin saberse cuándo ni cómo terminará.
Importa la sentencia, desde luego, pero el propósito se logró: Marcelo le ha hecho un gran servicio al país al denunciar ante un juez a un funcionario religioso que como cualquier ciudadano está obligado a cumplir la ley. El que acusa debe sustentar con pruebas su afirmación. Y el proceso seguirá su curso, como cualquiera otro, aunque estamos en presencia de una primera vez histórica: el jefe de Gobierno de la capital de la república acude al tribunal para exigir a un cardenal de la Iglesia católica que responda de sus palabras. Un ciudadano frente a otro ciudadano.
Lo que Ebrard aporta a las fiestas patrias, sin esa intención pero como beneficio colateral, es impedir se tuerza la intención libertaria y democrática de los autores de nuestras leyes e instituciones. Las leyes sobre el aborto, los matrimonios de homosexuales y el derecho a que adopten niños son formas de humanizar la relación entre los grupos sociales, sacando de las sombras a minorías satanizadas, integrándolas a un mundo en constante evolución, normalizando su vida en el entendimiento y la tolerancia de los demás. Esa ha sido hasta el momento la única idea inteligente en este tianguis monumental de errores festivaleros, en medio de la confusión entre las lentejuelas de la patriotería y la austeridad del patriotismo.
El señor Sandoval no está de acuerdo. Es natural. Es congruente con lo que representa y defiende. Pero lanzar piedras a casas ajenas cuando la propia tiene techo de vidrio resulta contraproducente. Es innecesario documentar delitos cometidos por religiosos que en los últimos años han indignado a la opinión pública mundial, para recomendar cautela. No se trata de eso, por lo menos no en este Bucareli.
Se trata de la libertad de vivir, la libertad dentro de leyes y principios fundamentales de la justicia heredados del derecho romano: vivir honestamente, no dañar a otro y dar a cada quien lo que le corresponde. Eso es lo que los mexicanos debemos defender y la mejor manera de hacerlo es ensanchar el espacio para cada uno de esos preceptos.
Supongo que el señor Ebrard acudió al juzgado sabiendo las consecuencias de su postura sin precedentes ante jerarcas de la religión que profesan muchos de sus posibles votantes. La carrera por las postulaciones ya está desatada. Ebrard debe haber previsto el peligro de esta pérdida de apoyo, pero la historia nos enseña que desde hace 150 años los mexicanos han sostenido una constante lucha en defensa del Estado laico ante el ataque constante de quienes pretenden recuperar privilegios irreversiblemente desaparecidos. Han sido mexicanos católicos quienes nos dieron, algunos a costa de su vida, el estado laico. Benito Juárez es el gran ejemplo a seguir.
El paso dado por Ebrard no es la movida de un peón en el tablero de la política efímera. Es una declaración de principios ante el embate de un sector poderoso que evoca su originaria afición a la pesca tratando de ejercerla en este río revuelto y desmadrado en que sobrevivimos los mexicanos. Ahora o nunca, porque la ocasión se va con este gobierno.
Se trata de mantener firme el timón de la autoridad institucional frente al aviso de un golpe de Estado en las tinieblas. Ese es el peligro inminente. Otro asunto es la soberbia y los malos modos de quienes juraron entregarse eternamente en cuerpo y alma a la humildad y la prudencia.
Y al amor al prójimo.

2. Painted Paper Wasps Punish Phonies
A new study suggests wasps bully peers that misrepresent their fighting abilities

Before a fight, many animals size up their opponents—however briefly. Even a once-over can provide crucial information about whether to stay and risk injury or turn and flee. Some animals have evolved telltale signs or behaviors that allow them to efficiently judge one another's strength and avoid any unnecessarily costly battles. Deer assess their peers' antlers, and some birds and lizards intimidate one another with prominent patches of color.
But what evolutionary pressures prevent an animal from deceiving its peers by looking like a bully when it's really a pushover? A new study published August 19 in Current Biology suggests that paper wasps control for this kind of deception using social punishment. Wasps beat up phonies.
To help establish stable hierarchies of dominance, highly social paper wasps called Polistes dominulus rely on distinct facial markings—bold black tattoos on their bright yellow faces. Dominant wasps display more fragmented facial patterns than submissive wasps, and the insects use these markings to determine who should submit to whom.
"They're kind of like karate belts for the wasps," says Elizabeth Tibbetts, a biologist at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and lead author of the study. "If someone wears a black belt, they are saying they are a good fighter, but you could imagine someone choosing to wear a belt of any color, even if they're not that good." Wasps can't change their faces at will, Tibbetts points out, but an advantageous mutation could plausibly create cheaters that boast talents they do not have.
To investigate how wasps read one another's faces, Tibbetts turned to some standard laboratory tools—paintbrushes and ink. She painted the faces of one group of paper wasps so that they advertised stronger fighting abilities than they really possessed. For the control group, she simply painted over the markings inherent in the wasps' faces, without changing their patterns. She also gave some wasps a hormone that made them more aggressive and others a hormone that did not change their behavior. Tibbetts then set up a series of duels, each between two wasps that had never met before: one wasp had been manipulated in some way and the other wasp's face and behavior were completely unaltered. She observed each match for two hours, waiting to see who would establish dominance—during which one wasp finally mounts and subdues another.
Any of Tibbetts's manipulations that interfered with the usual facial reflection of fighting abilities also interfered with the wasps' normal social interactions, preventing them from establishing typical social hierarchies. Wasps with gentle faces that behaved aggressively because of the hormone treatment had a lot of trouble convincing their rivals to submit. And the submissive wasps to which Tibbetts applied intimidating makeup were bullied again and again. As soon as their opponents discovered their deception, they were punished.
Tibbetts thinks this kind of social punishment could be particularly useful in long-term contests over valuable resources, during which wasps have the opportunity to repeatedly test the accuracy of their rivals' markings.
"Punishment not only hurts the cheater but provides a benefit to the punisher," Tibbetts says. "Over the course of the interaction, the punisher realizes that maybe their opponent's signal is not accurate. If they trusted the signal, they would have lost out."

La revista Scientific American publica un interesante artículo acerca de varias cuestiones éticas a las que la medicina actual se enfrenta cada día con más frecuencia. Las definiciones de que es la vida y que es la muerte se han complicado debido a los avances de la ciencia.

La inocencia que gozábamos en la niñez de la humanidad ya no es posible recuperarla y ahora que estamos entrando en una etapa de mayor madurez, deberemos dejar atrás las historias y fantasías en las que poníamos nuestra confianza. Ser adultos parecería que es enfrentar la realidad con los ojos bien abiertos y sin estar cobijados por mitos y cuentos que nos hacían sentir seguros o que nos daban respuestas sencillas a problemas complicados.

When Does Life Belong to the Living?

With thousands of people on the waiting lists for organs, doctors are bending the rules about when to declare that a donor is dead. Is it ethical to take one life and give it to another?

Death used to be a simple affair: either a person’s heart was beating, or it was not. That clarity faded years ago when heroic medical technology started to keep hearts beating in definitely. Although we have had decades to ponder the distinctions between various states of grave physiological failure, if anything our confusion has grown. When is it ethical to turn off a ventilator or remove a feeding tube? When does “life support” lose its meaning? And most critically, at what point is it acceptable to cut into a body and remove the heart that could save another life?

These issues are not academic. They raise questions about health care costs—is it worth using expensive machinery on a body that is for all intents and purposes dead?—as well as about dignity in end-of-life care. This year’s “death panel” subplot of the health care debate fed off the real fears people have about being taken advantage of when at their weakest.

The Most Pressing Question

What is it, finally, that divides the believer from the atheist? The question comes to mind in observing renowned atheist Christopher Hitchens endure, in full public view, metastatic esophageal cancer. In a remarkable Vanity Fair column, then in an interview with the vapid Anderson Cooper on CNN, and once again in a videotaped interview with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, Hitchens has movingly described his condition, his experience of chemotherapy, and many other aspects of his illness.

But the statements that have sparked the greatest discussion are the ones in which Hitchens declares that those religious believers who hope he will undergo a deathbed conversion are bound to be disappointed. Any such conversion, if it happened, would be the product of a brain consumed by cancer and a body wracked by pain. It should not be taken seriously, in other words, as a genuine expression of the beliefs and desires of the man known as Christopher Hitchens. It should instead be dismissed as the deluded ramblings of someone driven out of his right mind by suffering and disease. And the statements of a man in such a state tell us nothing worth knowing, either about him or about God.

Hitchens would be gratified to know that his comments reminded me of a writer we both revere: Holocaust-survivor Primo Levi. More specifically, Hitchens’ statements reminded me of how, during my time working for the theoconservative journal First Things, a devoutly Christian colleague reacted to a passage of Levi’s that I had admired for years as an incomparably powerful expression of stoicism, courage, and integrity.

Here is Levi, from The Drowned and the Saved:
“I entered the Lager (Auschwitz) as a non-believer, and as a non-believer I was liberated and have lived to this day. Actually, the experience of the Lager with its frightful iniquity confirmed me in my nonbelief. It has prevented me, and still prevents me, from conceiving of any form of providence or transcendent justice. . . . I must nevertheless admit that I experienced (and again only once) the temptation to yield, to seek refuge in prayer. This happened in October 1944, in the one moment in which I lucidly perceived the imminence of death . . . naked and compressed among my naked companions with my personal index card in hand, I was waiting to file past the “commission” that with one glance would decide whether I should go immediately into the gas chamber or was instead strong enough to go on working. For one instance I felt the need to ask for help and asylum; then, despite my anguish, equanimity prevailed; one does not change the rules of the game at the end of the match, nor when you are losing. A prayer under these conditions would have been not only absurd (what rights could I claim? and from whom?) but blasphemous, obscene, laden with the greatest impiety of which a nonbeliever is capable. I rejected the temptation; I knew that otherwise were I to survive, I would have to be ashamed of it.”

When I referred to this passage in the First Things offices, my pious colleague reacted with visible disdain, which he conveyed in the following way: In his fear and trembling before annihilation, Levi felt for the first time in his life the call of God. And how did he respond to this call? By refusing it. And why? Because it would have embarrassed him. Far from being admirable, the statement was an almost demonic expression of the deadly sin (and singularly Christian vice) of pride.

So a Christian considers pride a sin and a (Jewish) atheist does not. That’s hardly news. But my colleague’s—and Levi’s, and Hitchens’—positions were actually about more than this. At a deeper level they were about anthropology and what be called the epistemology of religious truth.
In their statements, Levi and Hitchens imply that a person’s capacity to determine the truth depends on his or her ability to think calmly, coolly, dispassionately. It depends on the capacity to bracket aspects of one’s subjectivity (like intense emotions, including fear of imminent death) that might distort one’s judgment or obstruct the effort to achieve an unbiased, objective view of the world in itself. This is the outlook of the scientist (Levi was a chemist), the philosopher, the champion of rational enlightenment, the secular intellectual and social critic. From this standpoint, the terrified, irrational effusions of a man facing his own extinction are no more to be trusted than a blind man’s account of a crime scene: each witness lacks the capacity to perceive, make sense of, and accurately judge the essential facts. Far more reliable are the sober, critical reflections of a man in good health, protected from danger, insulated from threats to his well being. That, for Levi and Hitchens, is a man at his best and most capable of determining the truth of things.
Religious believers—including my devoutly religious colleague at First Things—make very different assumptions about the proper path to truth and what constitutes a man at his best. As Rod Dreher noted in a post about Hitchens’ recent statements, a Christian believes that the experience of suffering discloses essential truths that cannot be discovered or known in any other way. What are these truths? That we are fundamentally weak and needy creatures. That we are anxious animals, longing for someone or something to soothe us, to protect us from and relieve us of our worries. That we greedily crave good things for ourselves—many of which (fame, fortune, honor, glory) only the luckiest will ever acquire, and some of which (happiness unmixed with sorrow) no one will ever enjoy within the limits of our finite lives.

For the religious person, human beings are at their best when they accept these truths and live humbly in their light, offering up their existential anguish as prayers, opening themselves up to the possible existence of a providential divinity who will answer those prayers and grant salvation from the horror of obliteration. Human beings are at their worst, by contrast, when they deny the fact of their frailty, deluding themselves into believing in their self-sufficiency. (This is where the critique of pride comes in.)

Levi and Hitchens reside in the first camp, believing that they are most themselves when they are healthy and free—at the height of their human powers; whatever they may feel or say (or be tempted to say) in moments of weakness or degradation deserves to be dismissed as inauthentic. But the devout reside in the second camp, insisting that human beings are truest to themselves—most authentic—when they are most vulnerable.

Which of them is right? That is perhaps the most pressing human question—and the one that points to what might be the deepest, most intractable division between the believer and the atheist.

The Limits of the Coded World

In an influential article in the Annual Review of Neuroscience, Joshua Gold of the University of Pennsylvania and Michael Shadlen of the University of Washington sum up experiments aimed at discovering the neural basis of decision-making. In one set of experiments, researchers attached sensors to the parts of monkeys’ brains responsible for visual pattern recognition. The monkeys were then taught to respond to a cue by choosing to look at one of two patterns. Computers reading the sensors were able to register the decision a fraction of a second before the monkeys’ eyes turned to the pattern. As the monkeys were not deliberating, but rather reacting to visual stimuli, researchers were able to plausibly claim that the computer could successfully predict the monkeys’ reaction. In other words, the computer was reading the monkeys’ minds and knew before they did what their decision would be.

We have no reason to assume that either predictability or lack of predictability has anything to say about free will.

The implications are immediate. If researchers can in theory predict what human beings will decide before they themselves know it, what is left of the notion of human freedom? How can we say that humans are free in any meaningful way if others can know what their decisions will be before they themselves make them?

Research of this sort can seem frightening. An experiment that demonstrated the illusory nature of human freedom would, in many people’s mind, rob the test subjects of something essential to their humanity.
If a machine can tell me what I am about to decide before I decide it, this means that, in some sense, the decision was already made before I became consciously involved. But if that is the case, how am I, as a moral agent, to be held accountable for my actions? If, on the cusp of an important moral decision, I now know that my decision was already taken at the moment I thought myself to be deciding, does this not undermine my responsibility for that choice?

Some might conclude that resistance to such findings reveal a religious bias. After all, the ability to consciously decide is essential in many religions to the idea of humans as spiritual beings. Without freedom of choice, a person becomes a cog in the machine of nature; with action and choice predetermined, morality and ultimately the very meaning of that person’s existence is left in tatters.

Theologians have spent a great deal of time ruminating on the problem of determination. The Catholic response to the theological problem of theodicy — that is, of how to explain the existence of evil in a world ruled by a benevolent and omnipotent God — was to teach that God created humans with free will. It is only because evil does exist that humans are free to choose between good and evil; hence, the choice for good has meaning. As the theologians at the Council of Trent in the 16th century put it, freedom of will is essential for Christian faith, and it is anathema to believe otherwise. Protestant theologians such as Luther and Calvin, to whom the Trent statement was responding, had disputed this notion on the basis of God’s omniscience. If God’s ability to know were truly limitless, they argued, then his knowledge of the future would be as clear and perfect as his knowledge of the present and of the past. If that were the case, though, then God would already know what each and every one of us has done, is doing, and will do at every moment in our lives.

And how, then, could we be truly free?

Even though this particular resistance to a deterministic model of human behavior is religious, one can easily come to the same sorts of conclusions from a scientific perspective. In fact, when religion and science square off around human freedom, they often end up on remarkably similar ground because both science and religion base their assumptions on an identical understanding of the world as something intrinsically knowable, either by God or ourselves.

While our senses can only bring us verifiable knowledge about how the world appears in time and space, our reason always strives to know more.

Let me explain what I mean by way of an example. Imagine we suspend a steel ball from a magnet directly above a vertical steel plate, such that when I turn off the magnet, the ball hits the edge of the plate and falls to either one side or the other.

Very few people, having accepted the premises of this experiment, would conclude from its outcome that the ball in question was exhibiting free will. Whether the ball falls on one side or the other of the steel plate, we can all comfortably agree, is completely determined by the physical forces acting on the ball, which are simply too complex and minute for us to monitor. And yet we have no problem assuming the opposite to be true of the application of the monkey experiment to theoretical humans: namely, that because their actions are predictable they can be assumed to lack free will. In other words, we have no reason to assume that either predictability or lack of predictability has anything to say about free will. The fact that we do make this association has more to do with the model of the world that we subtly import into such thought experiments than with the experiments themselves.

The model in question holds that the universe exists in space and time as a kind of ultimate code that can be deciphered. This image of the universe has a philosophical and religious provenance, and has made its way into secular beliefs and practices as well. In the case of human freedom, this presumption of a “code of codes” works by convincing us that a prediction somehow decodes or deciphers a future that already exists in a coded form. So, for example, when the computers read the signals coming from the monkeys’ brains and make a prediction, belief in the code of codes influences how we interpret that event. Instead of interpreting the prediction as what it is — a statement about the neural process leading to the monkeys’ actions — we extrapolate about a supposed future as if it were already written down, and all we were doing was reading it.

To my mind the philosopher who gave the most complete answer to this question was Immanuel Kant. In Kant’s view, the main mistake philosophers before him had made when considering how humans could have accurate knowledge of the world was to forget the necessary difference between our knowledge and the actual subject of that knowledge. At first glance, this may not seem like a very easy thing to forget; for example, what our eyes tell us about a rainbow and what that rainbow actually is are quite different things. Kant argued that our failure to grasp this difference was further reaching and had greater consequences than anyone could have thought.

The belief that our empirical exploration of the world and of the human brain could ever eradicate human freedom is an error.

Taking again the example of the rainbow, Kant would argue that while most people would grant the difference between the range of colors our eyes perceive and the refraction of light that causes this optical phenomenon, they would still maintain that more careful observation could indeed bring one to know the rainbow as it is in itself, apart from its sensible manifestation. This commonplace understanding, he argued, was at the root of our tendency to fall profoundly into error, not only about the nature of the world, but about what we were justified in believing about ourselves, God, and our duty to others.

The problem was that while our senses can only ever bring us verifiable knowledge about how the world appears in time and space, our reason always strives to know more than appearances can show it. This tendency of reason to always know more is and was a good thing. It is why human kind is always curious, always progressing to greater and greater knowledge and accomplishments. But if not tempered by a respect for its limits and an understanding of its innate tendencies to overreach, reason can lead us into error and fanaticism.

Let’s return to the example of the experiment predicting the monkeys’ decisions. What the experiment tells us is nothing other than that the monkeys’ decision making process moves through the brain, and that our technology allows us to get a reading of that activity faster than the monkeys’ brain can put it into action. From that relatively simple outcome, we can now see what an unjustified series of rather major conundrums we had drawn. And the reason we drew them was because we unquestioningly translated something unknowable — the stretch of time including the future of the monkeys’ as of yet undecided and unperformed actions — into a neat scene that just needed to be decoded in order to be experienced. We treated the future as if it had already happened and hence as a series of events that could be read and narrated.

From a Kantian perspective, with this simple act we allowed reason to override its boundaries, and as a result we fell into error. The error we fell into was, specifically, to believe that our empirical exploration of the world and of the human brain could ever eradicate human freedom.

This, then, is why, as “irresistible” as their logic might appear, none of the versions of Galen Strawson’s “Basic Argument” for determinism, which he outlined in The Stone last week, have any relevance for human freedom or responsibility. According to this logic, responsibility must be illusory, because in order to be responsible at any given time an agent must also be responsible for how he or she became how he or she is at that time, which initiates an infinite regress, because at no point can an individual be responsible for all the genetic and cultural forces that have produced him or her as he or she is. But this logic is nothing other than a philosophical version of the code of codes; it assumes that the sum history of forces determining an individual exist as a kind of potentially legible catalog.

The point to stress, however, is that this catalog is not even legible in theory, for to be known it assumes a kind of knower unconstrained by time and space, a knower who could be present from every possible perspective at every possible deciding moment in an agent’s history and prehistory. Such a knower, of course, could only be something along the lines of what the monotheistic traditions call God. But as Kant made clear, it makes no sense to think in terms of ethics, or responsibility, or freedom when talking about God; to make ethical choices, to be responsible for them, to be free to choose poorly, all of these require precisely the kind of being who is constrained by the minimal opacity that defines our kind of knowing.
As much as we owe the nature of our current existence to the evolutionary forces Darwin first discovered, or to the cultures we grow up in, or to the chemical states affecting our brain processes at any given moment, none of this impacts on our freedom. I am free because neither science nor religion can ever tell me, with certainty, what my future will be and what I should do about it. The dictum from Sartre that Strawson quoted thus gets it exactly right: I am condemned to freedom. I am not free because I can make choices, but because I must make them, all the time, even when I think I have no choice to make.

Conocí al Dr. Manuel Ayau, Muso, en 1977, cuando comencé a impartir clases en la Universidad Francisco Marroquín. Entonces nuestra relación fue esporádica y relativamente distante. Durante estos últimos años tuve la oportunidad de verlo más frecuentemente, de tratarlo más de cerca, y de admirar su temple y su talla.

Un día, mientras me guiñaba un ojo con una pizquilla de picardía, me dijo: “Yo antes me creía infalible. Ahora ya no”. El día que lo velábamos en la Plaza de la Libertad, de la UFM, alguien me dijo que el sacerdote que lo había atendido en los últimos momentos de su enfermedad le había comunicado que Muso no tenía miedo.

Ahora que ya no está físicamente entre nosotros, pretendo subrayar estos dos aspectos: no ser infalible y no tener miedo. ¿Puede ser el hombre algo más que esto? Saber que no se es infalible y aceptarlo es un signo de humildad, de sabiduría y de madurez. Saber que no se es infalible y no tener miedo es un signo de serenidad. Todos los hombres son falibles, pero eso no constituye ningún problema, al menos ningún problema grave. El problema –muy grave a veces– es que muchos creen que son infalibles y así actúan. La infalibilidad implica orgullo, engreimiento, autosuficiencia, prepotencia, exclusión de todos y de todo lo que no encaje en ese círculo. El infalible no atiende a razones ni acepta más verdad que la suya, o la que él cree que es la suya. El infalible no sirve a nadie, pero está convencido de que todos tienen obligación de servirlo. Y lo curioso del caso es que el infalible tampoco tiene miedo: ¿a qué, a quién, de qué y por qué?

Poco margen quedaría para las objeciones, si esto se quedara así. Que un cegato no vea puede ser una desgracia sólo para él. Pero que un cegato se empeñe en ser guía de otros, y además esté convencido de que así debe ser, es una desgracia para todos. Esto, lamentablemente, tiene muchas aplicaciones, en muchos círculos y en relación con muchas jerarquías. Valga sólo, como ejemplo general, pensar en los Gobiernos. Como ejemplo particular, pensar en el nuestro. ¿Hasta cuando seguiremos haciendo agua, antes de irnos definitivamente a pique?

Si Muso, a pesar de no creerse infalible, no tenía miedo, sólo puede ser porque se sabía y se sentía libre. Y tenía toda la razón: ¿qué puede temer el que es libre, como no sea perder su libertad? Pero hay una libertad radical que nunca se pierde. Y no es que no sufra amenazas, pero nunca se pierde. Es la libertad que –aparte de tiempos, normas, caprichos, golpes de suerte, incentivos o tentaciones de una u otra laya– nos constituye en tales. En cambio, el infalible se cree libre, cuando realmente es preso de su torpe, ciega e inexistente infalibilidad.

A new study has found that gorillas react to games of tag the same way that humans would - by trying to maintain their advantage when they’ve got the upper hand. The research, published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, investigates the way that gorillas respond to unequal social situations during ‘tag’ chases and play fights.

If one gorilla hits another during a play fight, the gorilla who dealt the blow will tend to run away from the other one. The fact that the miscreants tend to run away suggests that they are sensitive to the fact that their actions result in an unfair competitive advantage. The gorillas then try to maintain this advantage by running away, allowing them to avoid a reciprocal whack from their victim.

Previous research has shown that humans will usually try to maintain their competitive advantage when they get the upper hand in an unequal social situation, but this is the first time that non-human behaviour in this context has been analysed in a natural setting rather than the laboratory.

As the authors point out, “animals experiencing unequal situations in the form of social play are better equipped to conform their actions to social imperatives in more serious situations”. Learning how to react in unequal situations such as playfights and games of chase could provide animals and humans alike with vital survival skills – and this research seems to show that humans are not the only species who can act opportunistically when they have the upper hand.

El jesuita PierreTeilhard de Chardin propuso en el siglo pasado que la evolución del hombre nos llevaría a la creación de la noosfera, una esfera de inteligencia que englobaría el planeta entero. Hoy la internet parece estar realizando esa profecía.

David Riesman, Nathan Glazer y Reuel Denney en su libro de 1950, "La muchedumbre solitaria", señalaban que los individuos se estaban transformando al tener cada vez mas contactos pero de una menor profundidad, a la vez que sus valores y principios se volvían cada vez más flexibles y maleables. Este proceso no parece haberse revertido. Hoy con la “Red,” este proceso se ha multiplicado. Se calcula que la “Red” es el tercer “país” más poblado del planeta. Los individuos estamos cada vez más interconectados con más humanos, pero quizás más lejos de nuestras relaciones naturales, parientes y vecinos.

Pronto aparecerá el libro de Kevin Kelly, "What Technology Wants", en el que el autor plantea que la tecnología es como un organismo, enormemente complejo, que sigue sus propias tendencias y que está transformando a los individuos humanos en parte de un gran cerebro planetario. ¿Será que la profecía de Teilhard se esta cumpliendo? ¿Cuáles serán las consecuencias para nosotros los individuos humanos? ¿Estaremos acercándonos a lo que Nick Bostrom denomina “transhumanidad”?

¿Quién dijo –y con qué sentido– que lo mejor es enemigo de lo bueno? Cuando yo era niño, mis juguetes –caseros, naturalmente– se reducían a tres: un aro, una peonza y una pelota. La pelota tenía un núcleo de tiras de hule, en torno al cual, como formando un ovillo, se amarraba una determinada cantidad de hilo. Todo ello se forraba después con correal: piel de perro, debidamente depilada y curtida. Mi primera pelota de goma –goma virgen, se entiende– era casi un cubo, con las aristas un poco chatas. ¿Por dónde andaría entonces la redondez?

Como hemos avanzado tanto –a las pruebas me remito–, ahora resulta que uno de los defectos que tiene el famoso Jabulani es que es demasiado redondo. Óigame usted: ¡demasiado redondo¡ ¿Y por qué no lo hicieron un poquito cuadrado o un poquito picudo? ¿No habría sido preferible jugar un mundial de fútbol con un balón de rugby? Y, claro, como, según mi abuela (q.e.p.d), una desgracia nunca viene sola, escuchen esto: “Los expertos concluyeron que, pese a su sistema gripngroove, superficie rugosa para facilitar su toma por parte de los porteros, Jabulani tenía características aerodinámicas parecidas a las de una esfera perfecta. Podría salir disparada con más velocidad, pero ir más lenta brutalmente (sic)”. “´Las costuras del Jabulani son internas, el balón parece entonces una esfera perfecta´” ¿Y por qué no le hicieron las costuras externas, para humillar un poco esa perfección? Si perfección es lo que nos sobra en el mundo, ¿o no?
“´A causa de la forma del Jabulani, el tiempo de contacto con el pie es menor´” ¡Vaya por Dios! ¿Y por qué no le añadieron una meaja de goma fuera, para que se aquerenciara un poquitillo más con el dichoso pie?

Suponiendo que se pueda definir el pecado como una ofensa a Dios, ¿podrá reducirse cualquier pecado a un pecado de idolatría? Del término ídolo el Diccionario de la lengua española, de la RAE, trae dos acepciones: 1. Imagen de una deidad objeto de culto. 2. Persona o cosa amada o admirada con exaltación. De idolatría trae otras dos: 1. Adoración que se da a los ídolos. 2. Amor excesivo y vehemente a alguien o a algo. Por su lado, las palabras adoración, admiración, exceso, exaltación, vehemencia parecen inclinarnos más hacia el corazón que hacia la cabeza, y menos hacia la razón que hacia el sentimiento. ¿Por qué hay personas que se consideran ateas –vaya mi sincero respeto por delante a todas– y parecen volcadas, sin margen apenas para la reflexión sensata, en una actitud idolátrica ante infinidad de cosas, actividades u otras personas? Quien dice otras personas, dice políticos, artistas, deportistas, aventureros… Quien dice actividades, dice deportes o cultos, sobre todo considerados masivamente… Quien dice cosas, dice dinero, sexo, poder, prestigio… ¿Qué lugar se le reserva a la libertad individual? ¿Qué lugar a la razón, erigida sobre la libertad individual? ¿Qué lugar a la voluntad, erigida junto a la razón, sobre la libertad individual? ¿No parece trágicamente paradójico que muchos de los supuestamente más celosos de su propia libertad parezcan estar siendo víctimas de la supuesta libertad de otros? ¿Qué sentido tiene combatir un fanatismo desde otro, una postura dogmática desde otra postura no menos dogmática?

La última generación

El filosofo Peter Singer recientemente preguntó en un blog si el mundo sería mejor si la nuestra fuera la última generación. Singer se estaba refiriendo a la obra de David Benatar, “Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence” en la cual se plantea que la existencia no se justifica nunca. Vivir es sufrir. Una visión muy oriental, muy budista, pero compartida por muchas personas según se observa de los comentarios que sus lectores hicieron.

Otro numeroso grupo de comentaristas afirmaban la vida y la existencia, sin negar que vivir incluye el sufrir, pero consideran sin embargo, que es mejor existir que no existir.

Sin duda hay épocas propensas al pesimismo y al nihilismo. Épocas en el que las personas no ven propósito a sus vidas o salidas a sus problemas – individuales o colectivos – y se rinden en la búsqueda de sentido. Quizás este sea uno de esos períodos.

An Uninformed Conscience

Thirteen years ago, when I started writing this column for America, two of my early offerings dealt with the strategic function of conscience in our ethical lives. As the years have gone by, and especially during the past year with its increased polarization of moral positions in church and society, I am more convinced than ever that we need a clear understanding of just what conscience is and how it functions.

Although there is a range of opinions concerning what conscience is—from an inner voice, a feeling or a sense of shame to the internalized values of parents or culture—I propose that the most effective account is the one offered by St. Thomas Aquinas: Conscience is a particular kind of judgment, a moral judgment, by which we apply our knowledge of good and evil to practical action.

A conscience may be certain, but that does not mean it is correct.

As a practical moral judgment, conscience takes the form: “I ought to do X.” Aquinas points out that when I make such a judgment, I should follow it. But acting on my conscience is not enough. Like any other kind of judgment—business, artistic, scientific or athletic—we base our moral judgments not only on principles but on evidence, data and information. A judgment made without data, evidence or information is a foolish one indeed. Thus, Aquinas thought it is as important to inform one’s conscience properly as it is to follow it. If I refuse to look at evidence or information in forming my moral judgment, I am actually refusing to act morally.

It is this second point that seems most neglected in ethical discourse today. There is little doubt that various religions, nation states and philosophies hold different ethical principles. But whether one’s principles are based on duty, the will of God, submission to Allah, happiness, liberty or the common good, such principles are empty if they are not applied to the specifics of evidence, information and data.

Unfortunately, it is the resistance to evidence and information that marks so much of our present moral discourse. That is why the “marketplace” of ideas, or the “public square” has become so segmented and rigid.

In the world of politics and media, we find an increasing segmentation not only of markets but of convictions as well. Information is edited and selected to conform to the conviction of the viewer or the voter. Thus, information no longer informs or challenges one’s moral judgement; it only confirms opinion, whether that opinion is warranted or not. Spend one evening comparing the programs offered by MSNBC and Fox News. Compare Chris Matthews and Ed Schultz with Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. Whom do they ridicule? What is their presumed moral universe? What information do they never consider? If we listen to only one side of these polarities, we are not forming our judgment, we are propagandizing it.

No matter what the issue, competing ideologies offer plenty of moral judgments; but there is little willingness to address data or information offered by the opposition. Undocumented immigration, tax reform, the Free Gaza movement, the Gulf Coast oil disaster, the financial crisis, all generate fierce opinion. But it is almost impossible to find any polarized antagonist willing to examine carefully data or arguments that challenge ideology.

In the church, things are just as segmented. I regularly receive messages by e-mail from the right and left. Both sides seem totally certain, but they are also totally ignorant of the arguments and evidence on the other side. As Aquinas would say, a conscience may be certain; but that does not mean it is correct. So think of the issues: abortion, global warming, President Obama, the health care bill, immigration reform, the wars in the Persian Gulf. Do you find any true engagement of the issues? Or do you find only assertions?

As for those who aspire to form the consciences of Catholic believers, they too must do more than make pronouncements. They must engage the evidence and data offered by those who dissent from their opinion.

To refuse to inspect hostile data or listen to challenging information is to reveal a conscience that has capitulated to ideology.

If a nation or church forms its people to accept assertions blindly, without supporting evidence, it will form a community not of moral agents but of menaces. They may be sincere, but they will be sincerely dangerous.

Renta de vientres, madres subrogadas

Recientemente en la India nacieron unos gemelos, hijos de una pareja alemana pero de un vientre indio rentado. Los niños Nikolas y Leonard Balaz se encontraron sin documentos de identidad nacional y atorados en la India. La India no reconoce la nacionalidad india a los hijos de una madre india subrogada y Alemania tampoco les otorga la nacionalidad a los hijos genéticos de sus nacionales nacidos de un vientre extranjero.

Después de un largo proceso judicial, la familia Balaz logró resolver el problema legal y obtuvieron las visas necesarias para poder regresar con sus hijos a su país, Alemania.

Asimismo, un creciente número de parejas de hombres homosexuales acuden a ese país para obtener la renta de un vientre materno y así obtener un hijo natural, genéticamente propio.

El gobierno de la India hasta hace poco no se inmiscuía en esta novedosa situación, pero recientemente ha comenzado a regular este nuevo comercio. ¿Qué efectos tendrá esta nueva regulación? ¿Serán mayormente positivos o al contrario, sus efectos serán mayormente negativos? ¿Reconocer, permitir y regular este tipo de comercio de personas es moral y es ético?

Sin duda, los avances técnicos en los métodos reproductivos nos plantean cada día mayores dilemas morales, éticos y jurídicos.

La India es un país que por sus características demográficas (1,200 millones de habitantes) y económicas (un ingreso de 1,000 dólares per cápita al año) se ha convertido en la meca de quienes desean obtener un bebe de un vientre subrogado. El costo de obtener un bebe propio de un vientre rentado es una quinta parte del costo en los Estados Unidos, es decir unos 20,000 dólares en la India. La mujer que renta su vientre recibe alrededor de 7,500 dólares, razón por la que existen muchas candidatas para escoger.

Si las nuevas regulaciones de la India dificultan la renta de vientres, esta actividad se trasladará a la informalidad y la ilegalidad o bien a otros países que no pongan obstáculos a una actividad que tiene una creciente demanda y sin duda una creciente oferta. Pero aun así, cabe preguntarse sobre la moralidad de tal actividad y la prudencia de tal regulación.

Surrogate Motherhood in India, Ethical and Moral Implications

Is surrogacy ethical? Is outsourcing surrogacy to developing countries ethical? Though on its most fundamental level, surrogate motherhood can be interpreted as an economic transaction, the reality is far more complex due to the degree of intimacy involved. On top of the basic economics of the situation are layers of emotional complexity, rights of bodily autonomy, and unaddressed questions of women’s rights in developing countries. Each of these topics will be briefed below, and explored in greater depth on additional pages of this website.

Exploitation vs. Empowerment:
Question: Is surrogacy an act of dehumanization or empowerment for the poor women who agree to the procedure? Is this exploitation or opportunity?

Arguments: Critics of outsourcing surrogacy argue that payment for bodily services dehumanizes the surrogate mother and exploits her reproductive organs and capability for personal gain of the wealthy. Books such as Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale depict dystopic worlds where child-making is performed by mass incubators (Huxley) and subjugated handservants (Atwood). Dr. John Lantos from the Center for Practical Bioethics in Kansas City is one of strongest opposers to outsourcing surrogacy: he argues that the practice only raises the risk of baby farms in developing countries, compounded by the possibility that increasing competition among clinics will compromise safety measures for these Indian women.1

Supporters of surrogacy, however, highlight the overwhelming economic opportunities for these women in light of their educational background and social circumstances. Interviews with these women generally result in optimistic correspondences, with women expressing positive outlooks on buying a home, educating their children, or paying off debt. If surrogacy contracts are transparent and surrogate mothers are protected by adequate laws, then one could argue that shifting the income generation to mothers does lead to empowerment. Evidence for this viewpoint could stem from the case of microfinance and Mohammad Yunus, where microloans to female heads of families resulting in a positive case of general community development.

Reproductive Autonomy vs. Coercion
Question: How much control do these women have over their bodies and reproductive capacities? Is there evidence of coercion by family members or in-laws?

Arguments: Feminists might argue that equal rights for women means giving women autonomy to choose for themselves, to choose their lifestyle, sexual, and reproductive freedom. With that premise in mind, telling a woman that hosting a surrogate pregnancy dehumanizes her just imposes a new form of paternalism. Why not let each woman choose for herself?

In addition, arguments based on democracy posit the need for reproductive freedom and procreative liberty, of the negative right of interference by government on matters of personal choice. Along these lines, the silence of the Indian government is in line with values of democracy, with ethical guidelines advocating for a woman’s autonomy to choose her own reproductive rights.

The counterargument to this construct dwells on the concept of choice. How much choice does a poor women in India really have? With four or five children, an absent husband, elders to care for, and limited educational opportunities, does this woman really embody the feminists’ idea of choice? How can we know whether or not her husband or intimate partner forced her to “volunteer” her services? The patrilineal marriage system in India may grant substantial influence to mother-in-laws in pressuring these women to undertake surrogacy arrangements. Currently, community stigma against surrogate mothers forces many women to live in temporary apartments or keep their pregnancies secret.2 One woman tells people that she is bearing a child for a relative.3 In this scenario, the existence of voluntary choice is debatable, if not arguably invalid.

Religious vs. Cultural Concerns

The ethical debate on surrogacy has often looked to religious roots and cultural backgrounds in search of an answer. One of the first ancient references to infertility occurs in Genesis, when Jacob’s wife, like many of her Biblical peers, was unable to bear a child. After praying to God and begging her husband, she sends Jacob “unto” her maid and then adopts the resulting child as her own. Sara did likewise, sending Abraham to her maid Hagar, saying, “I shall obtain children by her.”4

It is often difficult to disassociate the influence of distinctly religious factors from other cultural conditions affecting women’s reproductive health. Further, religious groups often exert influence on civil authorities in matters of reproduction. Joseph Schenker has studied some of the religious differences towards ethics in surrogacy, and his findings are quite interesting. In Jewish law, a childless couple falls within the category of personal suffering and there exists a clear obligation to assist them in every permissible way, as long as no one is harmed in the process.5 The Catholic Church’s statement on assisted reproduction is clear: assisted reproduction is not accepted. The Eastern Orthodox Church supports medical and surgical treatment of infertility, and the Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Mormon, Presbyterian, Episcopal, United Church of Christ, Christian Science, Jehovah’s Witness, and Mennonite religions all have liberal attitudes toward infertility treatments. Islamic law encourages attempts to cure infertility, but only to the extent that IVF technologies involve the husband and wife.6

Dr. Anand Kumar, Ph.D., Chairman of Hope Infertility Clinic and Research Foundation, explores the Hindu perspective on surrogacy in his paper “Ethical Aspects of Assisted Reproduction – an Indian viewpoint.” He explains that Hindus have never seriously debated assisted reproduction because of their belief in karma, which preordains the kind of life an individual would lead after birth. There is no conflict between Hinduism and assisted reproduction, which is generally accepted as a form of treatment and not an infringement on religious beliefs.7

If done properly, Dr. Malpani of the Malphani Infertiliy Clinic believe that “surrogacy meets all three pillars of medical ethics: autonomy (allowing people to decide for themselves); beneficence (doing good); and non-maleficence (doing no harm).”8 Plausible? Perhaps. Controversial? Definitely. It is still too early to predict what effects the growing surrogacy industry will have on reproductive regulations in India.

We should remember the Shoah in a way that helps to heal the world

I first learned about the Shoah through a newsreel I saw in the fifth grade. The boy next to me started to laugh, and a girl got sick. I wept. "How could this be?" I asked. That memory haunts me to this day but I still don't have the answer.

Memory has been essential to Jewish survival. Our ability to remember our roots, our traditions, our stories and rituals has enabled us to thrive as a distinct people while other great civilizations have disappeared. The Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Chassidism, even saw memory in spiritual terms. "Exile is in forgetting, and redemption is in memory," he taught.

It is not clear just how redemptive memory can be, especially when it comes to the Shoah. How does one redeem the murder of so many innocents? How does one redeem one's faith in humanity, let alone in humanity's Creator? How does one move from the Shoah's horror to the future's promise?

There are no easy answers. Nevertheless, I think we must do two things that we have not yet done, or at least not done well.

First, the Jewish community must change the way we frame the Shoah. For too long this catastrophe has defined contemporary Jewish life. We are a traumatized people, and our trauma has kept us from moving beyond our own pain. This is understandable. World War II was not very long ago. Our suffering was immense — beyond imagining — and the world has yet to come fully to terms with what happened. Nevertheless, there is no future for us, no redemption in our collective conscience, if we define our past primarily by what the Nazis did to us. We must find a way to remember the Shoah without the Shoah overwhelming our idea of who we are.

We cannot bring back the dead, but we can live in ways that affirm who they were. This process begins by honoring Shoah survivors not so much for what they endured, but how they carried on with their lives. We are great at seeking the stories of their persecution, but not at trying to understand the sources of their great courage.

Next, the Jewish community must recognize that the Shoah was not just about us. Yes, we were the Nazi's main victims, but five million others also died at their hands — five million! That is almost the entire population of the San Francisco Bay Area — unimaginable! It is time we opened ourselves to the pain of other victims of Nazi terror. First, it is their due; it is simply not right to act as if we were the only ones who suffered during those evil times.

Our healing will not be complete unless we can recognize the suffering of other victims of radical evil. Sharing the pain of others doesn't only lighten the weight of the Shoah, but gives us opportunities for real tikkun — real repair, real healing. It is a sad truth that as long as the Shoah remains only about Jews, only Jews will care. In fact, by focusing exclusively on Jewish suffering, we have helped make the Shoah largely irrelevant to the rest of the world. Our recognition of non-Jewish Nazi victims makes clear that the Shoah was not "just a Jewish problem," but a human one. Human rights, once denied to one group, are easily taken from others.

At the dedication of the U.S. Memorial Holocaust Museum, Elie Wiesel declared that we might as well start building the Bosnia wing. Since then, we could add several other wings to represent nearly every continent. Ultimately, the Shoah's bloody finger points to a global issue that includes the memories of millions upon millions of genocide victims, people killed before, during and after the Shoah. Armenians, Cambodians and Rwandans, as well as many other victims of genocide, shared our fate and share our future equally.

Emil Fakenheim, a Shoah survivor and preeminent Jewish thinker of the 20th century, proposed a new commandment in addition to the traditional 613 that have symbolized Jewish law and life for the past 2000 years. His 614th commandment: to survive. But survival for its own sake is neither meaningful nor moral. As we move forward, as we seek to redeem the memory of all those who died in the Holocaust, we must find a way to reach beyond the notion of survival to one of human progress where "Never Again" applies to all people everywhere.

Se puede responder que Dios simplemente no existe. Que Dios es un ser perverso. Que Dios se viene escondiendo hasta desaparecer completamente. Todas estas y más son respuestas insatisfactorias a preguntas y preguntas y más preguntas que estamos obligados a hacer frente a este hecho concreto.

A propósito del film God on Trial

Why is there so much suffering in the world and what kind of God would allow it to happen? Universal questions about faith and philosophy are at the heart of God on Trial, which was inspired by the legend that a group of concentration camp prisoners conducted a mock trial against the Almighty God. From all walks of life, a physicist, a glove maker, rabbis, a law professor and at least one criminal weigh the evidence and offer thoughtful arguments taken from history, science, theology and personal experience.
